چکیده

An increased excretion of urinary formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) following an oral dose of histidine has been reported in various conditions other than folic acid deficiency,1 viz., vitamin B12 deficiency,2 hepatic cirrhosis,3,4 malabsorption syndrome,4 megaloblastic anemia associated with pregnancy and malnutrition,5 hemolytic anemia,6 iron-deficiency anemia,5 neoplastic disease,6 thyrotoxicosis,7 congestive cardiac failure,7 skin disorders,7 rheumatoid arthritis's toxemia of pregnancy,9 myelofibrosis,9 infants with protein malnutrition,10 a specific defect in gastrointestinal absorption of folic acid,11 folic acid reductase deficiency,'2 formiminotransferase deficiency syndrome,13 and acute leukemia treated with amethopterin.14 In the present study urinary excretion of FIGLU following an oral histidine load was estimated on children who were deficient in folic acid and/or riboflavin, and the relationship among urinary FIGLU, serum folate and blood riboflavin levels was investigated. The results obtained revealed that there was a tendency to reduction of urinary FIGLU in children with riboflavin deficiency than in those without it.

The urinary excretion of formic acid and formiminoglutamic acid in folic acid deficiency.

In previous investigations it was shown that in folic acid deficiency there is a large increase in the urinary excretion of formimino-n-glutamic acid (l-6). This increase has been explained by recent enzymatic studies demonstrating that the first step in the metabolism of formimino+glutamic acid is the transfer of the formimino group to tetrahydrofolic acid (7-9). Formimino-n-glutamic acid is a...

Folate deficiency and formiminoglutamic acid excretion during chronic diethylnitrosamine administration to rats.

Elevated levels of the histidine catabolito formiminoglutamic acid were excreted into the urine of rats that were given both 0.01% diethylnitrosamine in their drinking water for 1 to 5 weeks and an injection of a loading dose of histidine. Similar histidine loading of control rats that received no carcinogen did not produce an elevation in urinary formiminoglutamic acid excretion. The elevation...

Urinary excretion of formiminoglutamic acid by human subjects after antifolic acid therapy.

In the accompanying paper a sensitive and specific enzymatic method is described for the measurement of formiminoglutamic acid (1). In this paper data are presented on the application of this method for the assay of formiminoglutamic acid in the urine of a variety of patients. Formiminoglutamic acid is an intermediate in histidine metabolism, and requires tetrahydrofolic acid for its further me...

Excretion of formimino-glutamic acid in steatorrhoea.

Minor degrees of folic acid deficiency are very common in idiopathic steatorrhoea. The urinary excretion of formimino-glutamic acid (Figlu) after a histadine load is a satisfactory means of detecting this deficiency and may be used as a screening test for idiopathic steatorrhoea.
